Jury Dutch Classical Talent 2021

We turn away from the light and investigate the shadow we cast on the world around us. What does a shadow conceal, and what connects us? We explore the interplay of shadows between our body and the installation, the text and melody, the past and the present. Who leads, and who follows?

Shadowplay is a concert installation for which composers Amarante Nat and Nuno Lobo write music performed by clarinetist Jelmer de Moed and soprano Elisabeth Hetherington. The installation is made by cinematographer Boris Peters, scenographer Naida Amorim, and technician and sound artist Dario Giustarini, and merges with the music in the staging by Peter Leung. Shadowplay is a concept and production by Studio de Moed in collaboration with Gaudeamus.

Jelmer de Moed (1995) is a passionate clarinetist and curator who combines his love for chamber music with interdisciplinary projects from Studio de Moed. He performs concerts as a soloist and regularly plays chamber music with Rik Kuppen, Bram van Sambeek, Elisabeth Hetherington, and the Animato Quartet.

“A refined performer and a complete master of his instrument. Het displays the clarinets full range of colour.’ – Dutch Classical Talent 2021

In 2022, his debut CD was released with Rik Kuppen under AVROTROS Klassiek, featuring works by Brahms, Berg, Schumann, and Debussy. He was also a finalist of Dutch Classical Talent, for which he initiated the project NOX, featuring works by Pierre Boulez, Steve Reich, Amarante Nat, and Tijn Wybenga for clarinet and speakers.

In 2023, the first project of Studio de Moed, “Schaduwspel” (Shadow Play), will premiere at the Gaudeamus Festival. For this project, he commissioned compositions from Amarante Nat and Nuno Lobo and collaborates with soprano Elisabeth Hetherington, sound artist Dario Giustarini, cinematographer Boris Peters, scenographer Naida Amorim, and director Peter Leung. He will perform “Alchymia” by Thomas Adès with the Doric String Quartet during the String Quartet Biennale and make his debut at the Concertgebouw in the series “Jonge Nederlanders” with a new composition by Mathilde Wantenaar. As a guest programmer, he will curate the program for the chamber music festival “Geestverwanten” for ClassicalNOW in The Hague.

With a first prize at the Prinses Christina Concours, Classic Young Masters Award, and the Cultuurfonds Young Talent Award, he studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. He studied clarinet with Arno Piters, Hans Colbers, and Martin Spangenberg, and chamber music with Eberhart Feltz.
