Three contemporary composers reflect on the romanticism that inspired and enriched their music. Krysztof Penderecki writes an ode to the ‘Music Domestica’, Alfred Schnittke finishes the piano quartet of his inspirator Gustav Mahler, and George Kurtag brings an ode to Robert Schumann, the famous master of musical poetry.
Pianist Rik Kuppen and Clarinetist Jelmer de Moed started have been playing together for many years. They both received prices during the National Finals of the Prinses Christina Competition and as a result toured Europe and Mexico. Rik was finalist of the YPF piano competition and toured The Netherlands in his Dutch Classical Talent Tour in 2019. Jelmer received the Classic Young Masters Award in 2016 and studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin where the duo receives lessons from Martin Spangenberg and Eberhart Feltz. In 1940 Olivier Messiaen is arrested and deported to the prisoner camp Stalag VIII. Because the officer has heard of Messiaen’s arrival het grants him the opportunity to compose at an old piano. It is here that he writes his Quartet for the end of time for the musicians and instruments that happen to be inside the camp. Symbolism originates from our fascination of this extraordinary composition and our research of its origins. Together with Rik Kuppen, Tim Brackman and Pieter de Koe we journey through music of Claude Debussy and Olivier Messiaen.

‘From the beginning I have been captivated by a greed, a devilish jealousy of beautiful things.’
That’s how Tristan Keuris described his starting point. In his studies with Ton de Leeuw, he familiarizes himself with the serialistic techniques, but soon throws them aside. We do not find an administrator behind his music, but a composer who wants to tell a story. The assembly of works by Keuris and his inspirator form the starting point of the program played together with the Animato Quartet.
